It’s always amazing to meet sneaker aficionados from all walks of life. It’s always great to hear what the people who buy the kicks have to say on the culture, but it is also awesome to hear what people that work at these famed and great stores have to say. I had the pleasure this week to chat it up with Morsylvia. She is one amazing person with a great sense of humor and so many fresh kicks. She has been working in the field for quite sometime and has seen changes and great things in the culture. Please enjoy what she has to say.

Thanks again for allowing us to have a minute of your time for the site. We know you been really busy lately with all the sneaker releases that have been dropping left and right.

- Hahaha, thank you for considering me to be part of this series. It’s a pleasure and honor.

So how long have you been into sneakers?

- I would have to say it started back in middle school. I have a twin brother that parents use to buy him Jordans and I wasn’t allowed to have them hahaha. The reason was because I would tear apart my shoes like crazy. I was always active and into sports that would make my shoes get ruined faster. I would see my brother clean his shoes right after he got home. I wasn’t like that. Hahaha. I was rough as a kid. I had scuffs on them by the end of the day of getting them.

What was the first pair of sneakers you instantly fell in love with?

- It would have to be in middle school when I saw some Air Force 1s that were all white and have a clear sole with a bubble clear swoosh. I loved everything about them. This was also the first pair os shoes that I owned that I took really good care of them. They were just so amazing to look at.

When you are looking for sneakers for yourself what catches your attention and what do you look for?

- I really like bright colors of sneakers. I love them to have a lot of color and be really unique. A few years back I use to buy everything just to have. Now I only buy what I really like. Working with the company I am able to see a lot of releases that catch my attention and get ideas of what I am going to buy.

What is your favorite pair of sneakers you have owned?

- It would have to be a pair of Nike Dunks that were a plaid color. It was a combination of navy blue on the toe and the rest of the shoe had a plaid combination of red, yellow, and forest green all over. The shoe dropped somewhere around 2003 and 2004. It has been my favorite of all time. I am still on the search to get another pair.

So what do you think applies to you “Buy to rock or buy to stock”?

- Nowadays I still get my shoes dirty but take better care of them. Personally I wear all my shoes. I only have 2 dead stock pairs in my closet. I wear all my pair besides though. For me they are shoes and once they are done they are done. I believe people should wear all their shoes. I like showing off all my shoes and getting compliments as well. Why just leave them in a box? To me there is no point to that. You might as well wear them and enjoy them before they crumble.

What is a pair of sneakers are you on the hunt for?

- I would really like to get a pair of Tiffany SB’s. I am a big fan of dunks and those are just so awesome. I would love to have them some day. Those really caught my eye since the beginning.

What are some last words you would like to give all our readers out there?

- People should stop worrying about pleasing others. People should buy what you like and not care what others think about your choices. Be true to yourself and buy what you like. You really shouldn’t be buying shoes for other people so they can like them. Also, to all the females out there that buy shoes just to please others and they really don’t like them in the first place, they shouldn’t buy them if they really are not cool with them. I also think all this heavy reselling has got to stop. Reselling is really hurting the market and the love for shoes as well.

Growing up with such a vast collection of music from all types of genres and all corners of the world I can say I quite picky with my music taste. I grew up with things like Benny Goodman, Hank Williams, The Subhumans, Iggy Pop, The Fat Boys and other timeless bands and performers. Just like sneakers I don’t really pick up new music up. Maybe it’s because I grew up with some great stuff and dug deep to find some amazing things. Every now and then some new music and it will resonate the walls of my house for at least a week. It takes a lot to captivate me music wise, the beat has to be infectious or at least take me somewhere foreign with some instruments not really experimented in the states with. The vocals have to be revelant or at least conscious. Quite a some prerequisites right? For me it isn’t since I put a lot of time and effort making a living spinning records and mixing it with some current music that meets the older caliber. I was hired because I wanted to be innovative and different and no be a cookie-cutter DJ like most of the Dj’s out there. (That is a whole different story that I will write about on a later date. HA!) With that being said here are some new albums that just came out and some older releases I just discovered. Frank Ocean’s “Channel Orange” Definitely an innovative album for him and breaks a bit away from his previous work he collaborated with other Hip-Hop artist nowadays. I love that he was able to channel different mediums for inspiration. Some light melodies oozing with heartfelt lyrics. This will be a classic someday. Tom Waits “Small Change” I am a HUGE Tom Waits fan. I became a fan of his work at an early age (12 to be exact). I loved reading Charles Bukowski books because of his direct link to the blue collar worker and his everyday strives. My grandma then introduced me to Tom Waits because she said he is the equivalent to Bukowski in a musical sense. Over the years I have added countless vinyls on Waits but never had this album. A true array of lush Jazz melodies that fill the air with Waits deep heavy raspy voice. This album is quite a delight to listen to when you want to ease your worries on a porch and crack open a cold brew (or a hard liquor on the rocks) Los Tres Reyes “Antologia” A stroll down memory lane living in a small apartment with my grandma and having her make some delicious and exquisite pupusas (a Salvadorian dish). The aroma engulfed the walls with this wonderful trio. This album that I just became acquainted with has the definitive collection that truly shows of their superb guitar skills and heartfelt lyrics to serenade that women they loved dearly. Dengue Fever “Sleepwalking through Mekong” A true masterpiece done with such respect to early Cambodian rock. This album truly captures her true vocal range and travel so smoothly with the guitar riffs. The instrumentation on this album is done perfectly and you can catch yourself humming some of these tunes for days to come. Fat Freddy’s Drop “Boondigga” Love this song for its lush smooth melody and instrumentation. A perfect song to listen to with your mate and get covered with such sensual lyricism and soft melody. What have you guys been listening to lately?

This week I had the honor and privilege to chat it up with someone I see as truly a knowledgeable person and extremely humble. The person I am speaking about is DJ Guamstyles of OTWS (Off The Wall Site). Enjoy!

How’s it going Dj Guamstyles, thank you for giving us the opportunity to chat it up with you.

-No problem man, it’s an honor.

First of all how did you come up with the name DJ Guamstyles? I know DJ’ing had a part in it hahaha.

-Haha yah it did. It’s kinda funny because it originated from an AOL screen name I had.

I remember listening to some of your older stuff when you DJ’ed. What made you start DJ’ing and do you still do events?

-I grew up around music. My parents love their rock, and soul, and oldies. Their record collection was pretty diverse, so I was exposed to everything growing up. From Classic Rock, to Easy Listening, to Pop, we listened to it all. I’ve been a fan of music since a young age. My dad had every Fat Boys tape, and that was probably my introduction to Hip-Hop, and I was glued to my radio ever since. I used to ruin my records, on my Fisher Price portable turntable, by scratching on them. I was always being yelled at for that! That beige one, that was like a suitcase, you know what I’m talking about? Later on, in high school, my friends and I started playing CDs at friend’s birthday parties and stuff. We got a crappy Radio Shack mixer with analog VU meters, and we just played CDs from two CD players. No mixing, just fading in and out between songs. It wasn’t until we linked up with our friends who were already deejays in high school, who had complete systems, and were doing our school dances, and lunchtime activities, that we got introduced to real deejaying. We knew that we needed to step our game up, so we went out and purchased some Gemini CD mixers. They were whack, so we upgraded to the Denon 2000s. Not good enough, so we then again upgraded to the Denon 2500Fs. We thought we were set! Well, that was until I learned that my uncle James, who I’ve known for many years as my aunt Cris’s boyfriend, was a deejay back in the day. He said he didn’t use his turntables anymore and that he’d sell them to me. My friend fronted the cash for them, and we said goodbye to the CD mixers! I later on found out from him, that he was part of this Hip-Hop group that formed in the late 80s in Leimert Park, South Central Los Angeles. That group was the Freestyle Fellowship! I didn’t know what that was, or how instrumental they were to the early scene, but as I became a student of the Hip-Hop culture, I realize how legendary they were. I’m honored to name drop him anywhere! So yeah, what up uncle James aka J.Sumbi! He was also The Nonce’s DJ (Mixtapes). I’ve somehow turned this question into a life story, haha! But I don’t deejay as much as I used to because of time and other things but still every now and then I do friends parties and stuff like that. Check out all my DJ partners though, from Critical Beatdown. That’s my fam right there!

So what made you start digging Vans?

I didn’t really buy Vans when I first got into collecting sneakers, but what got me into them heavy was their Syndicates. It was like their answer to Nike SB. I love how everything about them serves a purpose and the design is well capsulated. It’s also dope that all their shoes have a great story behind them. They really pay attention to all the details.

So what pair of Vans are you in the hunt for?

-It would still have to be the Syndicate 011 x Jason Jessee ’09 Notchback Sk8-Hi’s. I passed on it multiple times because retail was a bit expensive. That’s the thing about Syndicates they can sit for a year and BOOM they are all gone the next day. When I was ready to get them they were all shipped back to Vans. Vans let’s stores ship back shoes that didn’t move well. This was the time the earthquake in Haiti hit and Vans shipped out lots of shoes to help those in need. So yeah, some Haitians are rockin’ some serious Vans Syndicate heat over there!

Wow, I had no idea that Vans let stores do that and more amazed that Vans helped out so much!

-Yeah Vans really helps out everyone.

So how did you became involved with OFFTHEWALLSITE?

-The original OTWS (offthewallsite.com) was very integral with my interest in Vans, and becoming involved with the “rebirth”. I was learning a lot about Vaults, Collaborations with shops, and other special or limited edition models. The people were cool as well, and when RAF let the site expire, a lot of us were stranded without anywhere to go. It killed off the Vans collector almost instantly. Tons of guys started selling off their stuff. Shoes that used to sell for almost $200, were fetching $100 at best. There was very minimal interest anymore, and what sucked was that a lot of dope stuff was still releasing! I found a few of the OTWS members at a Dunkxchange in Fullerton, CA one time, and they said they were all communicating over on ISS forums. That was our home for pretty much all of 2009 and most of 2010. As the Vans popularity started to gain steam, we felt that a single thread for all of us wasn’t sufficient. I then suggested the idea of starting up OTWS again. I already had some knowledge with blogging, so that was a plus. I had zero knowledge about creating and administrating a forum, though. In December of 2010 we started the forum. The blog was started a few weeks before that. It was rough in the beginning, but we got by. People then slowly migrated to OTWS because it was a place where we could do our own thing.

Vans Shoes does truly have a strong following. It’s great to see the bond y’all have.

-We don’t know why it’s like that, but we acknowledge and embrace it! A lot of people were stoked to see that we were back up and running again. People came out of the wood works, and started spreading the word. There’s not much hype with Vans, so we tend to get genuinely loyal members. They don’t mind helping others find stuff, and doing favors for others. It’s what sets us apart from the rest of the blogs and forums. OTWS doesn’t exist without all of the contributing members. Members design tees, logos, etc. that we turn into stickers and tees for us. The “WDYWT” posts help give the members some exposure to our main blog, and since I know almost every shoe they post pics of, I am simultaneously educating the readers of the blog on what this or that shoe is. People have given great feedback on that aspect. We don’t try to be elitists. We want others to know how to find stuff, and rep it.

That’s fresh that you guys really cater to your culture. I also see you have a strong following on Instagram. How is that going?

-The Instagram feed @OFFTHEWALLSITE has also been a big part of us growing exponentially these past months. By having people hashtag #OTWS, I can pick and choose from a lot of awesome Vans related photos. I try to have variety, and I don’t cater to any specific genre, style, or username. If a user on Instagram gets a lot of reposts from @OFFTHEWALLSITE, it’s because they take unique and cool photos! Simple as that! (Also, don’t be “thirsty for attention” and hashtag #otws on every single Vans photo you take. Just the ones that you think people would really want to see!) It’s also allowed us to connect or be acknowledged by some of the designers, heads of departments, and some reputable people over at Vans. That’s one step closer to getting on the other side of that proverbial “fence” of the industry. Right now, I’m sitting on the fence, telling our members and readers what I see over there, and I try to relate back what I see, in my own words. One day I’ll get offered a collaboration project or something cool from Vans! One day!

So what is the near future for OTWS? I see you are working on some new stuff with Dennis Padua of Lazy Work, how did that come up?

-Dennis and I have known each other since high school, but hung out with different groups. His little brother and I are good friends, so you could say we come from the same circle of friends, by way of friends, family, and siblings. It was always a wish of mine to have him design something for OTWS. It’s like he was so close, but so far, due to him being occupied with Ek5obition clothing, RIF.LA’s line, and what not. The timing was just right, I guess, and it was great to finally get him to help us. We’re like best friends now, haha. It’s like that moment in Step Brothers where they say “Did we just become best friends?! …Yup!” His first design for us is on sale now, and I feel that it represents OTWS. We wanted it to a dope graphic that could be worn with anything, not just Vans, but with some inspiration from Vans, like with the color combos that we picked.

Well, thank you Dj Guamstyles for your time. It was dope to hear what you had to say. Any last words for everyone out there?

-Keep up with us on the OTWS site and Instagram and thank you to all our members, and followers!
Follow me @DJGUAMSTYLES if you care to see what I do with my personal life, and follow @OFFTHEWALLSITE if you get down with Vans! (That’s for both Twitter and Instagram)

Hello everyone it’s been quite sometime that I haven’t done the interview series. I had to work on some things but I am back to bring you some fascinating people.

This week I bring to you someone I have admired for quite sometime because of his business venture and his very in depth sneaker reviews. I remember watching in early January of 2010 him reviewing some very highly sought after Nike SB Bisons. Before this to my knowledge there was no one really reviewing thoroughly Nike SB’s. I had the privilege and pleasure to sit down with Mr. NikeSB6 and chat a little about Suxcess Clothing, sneaker videos, sneakers, and future plans.

How’s it going Mr. NikeSB6, thank you for taking the time with chatting with us from F5ToRefresh. Where are you from originally? Also how did you come up with MrNikeSB6?

-Thank you for interviewing me and being interested in what I have to say. I just really love Nike SB’s and the “6” is because of where I am from; the Bronx.

First of all I just wanted to say thank you for making some really dope sneaker reviews. What made you start making sneaker reviews in particular Nike SB’s?

When I started no one was heavy on sneaker reviewing Nike SB’s and just wanted to share my love because no one was doing it. I just felt I had to do it myself. I just wanted to help others making a decision if they had doubt about buying a pair of shoes. I talked about things like the color scheme, quality and the fit of the pair.

How long have you been collecting and how long have you been into kicks?

I been into kicks for a long time, I started to like kicks since I was 8 years old but changed from consumer to collector and started stacking shoes when I was 13 years old. I did the whole keep you kicks clean with the toothbrush at that time as well. I also got into kicks because of my dad. He was really into shoes, his friends use to call him “Snow Shoes” because he always kept his shoes clean and white.

You started really young in this, I been into sneakers heavy at the same time you were and started doing small jobs to get cash. How did you convince parents to get money for kicks and all?

I started young man, my pops showed me how to be a hustler and how to make money. My first job was at a hardware store and just worked hard and hustled. When I got older I got myself a different job, got myself an apartment. I spent $500 on rent, some cash here and there on groceries and other stuff and the rest was like$1,500 on sneakers.

Now how did you get into Nike SB’s in particular and just made you start copping more of them?

It all started when I saw some kid was skating in some Nike SB low Vapors. I didn’t know what they were. I fell in love with the stuffed tongue as well, you didn’t see that on Dunks. I ended up doing my research online later. It was also dope no one else was rocking them where I’m from ‘cuz everyone was rocking J’s.

What was your first pair of Nike SB’s then?

It was the Nike SB Classic “Grouches” and I still have them to this day and I’ll rock them ’till the soles fall off. Hahaha I buy kicks to wear them.

I know most people have a particular pair of kicks that are their most prized, I’m curious to know first of all what is your most prized SB?

For most prized SB it would have to be the Nike SB Dunk High Paul Browns or some people call them the “Campers”. I love the color scheme, the brown, blue, and green was dope. The quality of the suede and tongue were dope as well. It’s quality at it’s finest.

Are there other kicks you are interested as well?

-I’m a big Air Max 1 fan as well. To me it’s all about comfort and the looks. They go hand in hand.

What is your most vivid memory of a pair of kicks, we all have one story that we will always remember.

-It would have to be a pair of Nike Huarache lows. The color scheme was emerald and yellow. I even had the whole works to match it. I asked my mom and she said no and to go ask my dad. He worked hard and he got them for me. I was so happy when he took me to a spot that had them and they even had my size. It was the perfect size as well. What’s crazy is that on the fucking 4th day I literally stepped on dog shit and it pissed me off. They were stained forever! It hurt me when my mom had to throw them out and was worried my dad would be pissed because he barely got them for me.

Damn man I could imagine that really hurt!

-It did. I later got the new Huarache lows that had the same color way because they were my favorite non SB.

Now I been knowing and became a fan of your brand Suxcess clothing for some time. When did you start Suxcess and how did you come up with the idea to start your own brand?

-I started it back in last year in April. I came up with the name because of my YouTube channel. I got the inspiration from peoples comments either be it a thumbs up or people saying you suck. I took the criticism positive and just to try again and give it 100%. It’s also because everyone in life their goal is to be successful and so do I. You can learn more from criticism. I started making shirts because I noticed most brands were making shirts based on Jordan’s and no one was focusing on SB’s. I wanted to come up with something in my own style. My first design was inspired by all my fans that watch my videos. I just wanted to give thanks for all their support.

So what can we expect from Suxcess later on? Any info or hints for some future stuff?

-I take my time when I do my shirts and stuff because I always want to give 100% in all I do. You don’t want to half ass things, you know what I mean? Expect more dope designs and some embroidered stuff coming up soon I have a lot of ideas that you guys will see in the near future.

Any last words for all the readers of F5ToRefresh?

R.I.P Dad, I Love you. Thank you for your support and please check out my sites.
