New records on heavy rotation

0 Comments 14 July 2012

Growing up with such a vast collection of music from all types of genres and all corners of the world I can say I quite picky with my music taste. I grew up with things like Benny Goodman, Hank Williams, The Subhumans, Iggy Pop, The Fat Boys and other timeless bands and performers. Just like sneakers I don’t really pick up new music up. Maybe it’s because I grew up with some great stuff and dug deep to find some amazing things. Every now and then some new music and it will resonate the walls of my house for at least a week. It takes a lot to captivate me music wise, the beat has to be infectious or at least take me somewhere foreign with some instruments not really experimented in the states with. The vocals have to be revelant or at least conscious. Quite a some prerequisites right? For me it isn’t since I put a lot of time and effort making a living spinning records and mixing it with some current music that meets the older caliber. I was hired because I wanted to be innovative and different and no be a cookie-cutter DJ like most of the Dj’s out there. (That is a whole different story that I will write about on a later date. HA!) With that being said here are some new albums that just came out and some older releases I just discovered.   Frank Ocean’s “Channel Orange” Definitely an innovative album for him and breaks a bit away from his previous work he collaborated with other Hip-Hop artist nowadays. I love that he was able to channel different mediums for inspiration. Some light melodies oozing with heartfelt lyrics. This will be a classic someday.   Tom Waits “Small Change” I am a HUGE Tom Waits fan. I became a fan of his work at an early age (12 to be exact). I loved reading Charles Bukowski books because of his direct link to the blue collar worker and his everyday strives. My grandma then introduced me to Tom Waits because she said he is the equivalent to Bukowski in a musical sense. Over the years I have added countless vinyls on Waits but never had this album. A true array of lush Jazz melodies that fill the air with Waits deep heavy raspy voice. This album is quite a delight to listen to when you want to ease your worries on a porch and crack open a cold brew (or a hard liquor on the rocks)   Los Tres Reyes “Antologia” A stroll down memory lane living in a small apartment with my grandma and having her make some delicious and exquisite pupusas (a Salvadorian dish). The aroma engulfed the walls with this wonderful trio. This album that I just became acquainted with has the definitive collection that truly shows of their superb guitar skills and heartfelt lyrics to serenade that women they loved dearly.   Dengue Fever “Sleepwalking through Mekong” A true masterpiece done with such respect to early Cambodian rock. This album truly captures her true vocal range and travel so smoothly with the guitar riffs. The instrumentation on this album is done perfectly and you can catch yourself humming some of these tunes for days to come.   Fat Freddy’s Drop “Boondigga” Love this song for its lush smooth melody and instrumentation. A perfect song to listen to with your mate and get covered with such sensual lyricism and soft melody.     What have you guys been listening to lately?
